Overstruck on an official denarius of Marcus Aurelius
Lot 1900
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Early 3rd to mid 4th centuries. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 2.95 g, 1 h), Taman Peninsula. Stage 1, imitating Commodus (177-192). NNNNSC[...]NN Laureate head of Commodus to right. Rev. HM[.]HSVIINON[...] Salus standing front, head to left, feeding serpent, rising from altar, out of patera with her right hand and holding scepter in her left. Sergeev -, cf. 280 ff. Holed and with traces of overstriking, otherwise, very fine.

What makes this imitation particularly interesting is the fact that it was overstruck on an official denarius of Marcus Aurelius: his portrait and part of the legends are still clearly recognizable on the obverse and reverse
